Tameside Council is scouting for the borough's top sporting heroes. They need people in Tameside to help them find the borough's most talented sports performers, coaches and volunteers who could be short listed in this years prestigious Tameside Sports Awards 2010. The annual award ceremony, now to include Tameside school sport awards, will be held at Manchester City Football Club on Friday 8th October 2010. The awards, which are sponsored this year by Davies Sports, celebrate achievements spanning 18 months from 1st January 2009 to 30th July 2010 across seven categories. A number of category winners will also be invited to represent Tameside at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards. Councillor David Sweeton, Project Head for Sport said “These awards give us the opportunity to raise awareness of the excellent work which takes place across the sporting community in Tameside whilst also recognising the support given to people of all ages to take part and succeed in a wide range of sports and activities.” John Clement, Senior Marketing Manager for Davies Sports said “Tameside has a history of creating successful sporting heroes; the Tameside Sports Awards help continue the quest to find the region’s most talented sports performers. Davies Sports are proud to be sponsoring this important event in 2010 and look forward to hearing the stories from the nominees”. Categories for this year are: Coach of the YearA community, club or school based coach who has made a significant impact or contribution to the development of performers in their sport or borough. Club of the YearA sports club which has made a significant impact or contribution to the development of sport in the community. Volunteer in Sport of the YearA person who has volunteered their time and made a significant impact or contribution to the development of performers, club, community or school. Unsung Hero in Sport AwardA person who has made an impact over a number of years on people, club, school or within the community. Sports Achiever of the YearA sports performer who has made significant improvement in their development as a sports player/athlete. Disabled Sport Achiever of the YearA person who has made significant contribution, impact or improvement in their development as a disabled sports player/athlete. Team of the Year (2009/10)A community club or school based team who throughout 2009/10 have shown success in relation to the criteria below:
People can now nominate their sporting favourites by completing the Tameside Sports Awards nominee form or fill out an application (see below). The borough awards will be judged by representatives from Tameside Sport Services and Tameside School Sports Partnership. The Greater Manchester Sports Awards judging panel will include representation from all the boroughs in Greater Manchester as well as GreaterSport.
